SUNCOOK VALLEY CHORALE, INC.
Our History
Visit our Program History page to see what we've been singing.
The Suncook Valley Chorale is a non-auditioned Concord-based community chorus that draws its membership from surrounding communities in Central and Southern New Hampshire.
Established by the Pittsfield Area Arts Council in the spring of 1982 to perform at the celebration of Pittsfield’s Bicentennial, and generated by the enthusiasm of that event, participants developed a more far-reaching organization, striving to grow in numbers, geographic representation and musical skills. The Suncook Valley Chorale was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1985.
2006-2007 marks the Silver Anniversary year, with two special concerts, drawing from the files and celebrating 25 years of Singing for Joy.
Membership in the Chorale has grown to approximately 65 over the years. Singers range in age from teenagers to octogenarians, united in their love for singing, while striving to present two fine performances each January and May in the Concord area. The essence of the Chorale is best expressed through its motto: “Sing for Joy.”
Program repertoire is varied, ranging from Bach to the Beatles, with the January concert devoted to classical music and the May concert leaning toward a lighter format. The Chorale aims to constantly grow in musical knowledge and skill. To that end, the Chorale’s current music director, Scott Lounsbury of Wolfeboro, is a young, infectiously enthusiastic, funny, and best of all, musically talented leader.
Although the Chorale’s dedication to music is serious, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Director Scott Lounsbury writes: “When we gather together to join our voices in song, we cease being individuals, and strive to create a group sound – it is the striving itself that is so necessary. In ways, the product itself does not matter, for it is the process of creating that product which has the greatest intrinsic value.”
Rehearsals begin each September with two open sings to attract new members. Rehearsals are held each Monday evening for generally two hours, at the Pleasant View Retirement Center Auditorium, with the tempo and length of rehearsals increasing during the final weeks before a performance. Following January’s concert there is a brief “break” before two more open sings are held for spring concert rehearsals
